February 2018 - Newsletter

Fellow Nomads

As the sun sets on my year as captaincy, it is with happiness that I say thank you, for sharing a wonderful year with me.

February was no exception as we held our monthly game at Bronkies and as usual Bronkies did not fail to surprise with a course that was easy on the eye and the greens a delight to putt on. The scoring was unusually high and I commend all those who played so well.

At the start of March, we headed to the Royal Cape golf course in Cape Town for our National Nomads Tournament. Knowing the challenges that faced us regarding the water crises we were not prepared for the abnormally strong winds that presented themselves to us on the first few days of the tournament.

Although our scores were slightly below average, we soldiered on and towards the end of the tournament we produced scores that went well above the average, which I must say well done to those who played in these tough conditions. Congratulations must go to Nic Stolp who emerged as the Top-Notch Golfer for the Northerns team.

In the final analysis it was the coastal teams that came out tops with WP leading the way followed by Boland, Eastern Cape and Border. We ended up in 10th place successfully avoiding the wooden spoon.

My Captains year was filled with many highlights. Our 50th Anniversary being the pic of the list. We received so many accolades for our event that many Clubs have taken a leaf from our book to reconstruct their own upcoming anniversaries.

Our Gold cup was a fabulous event, well supported and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our Champion of Champions winner, Andre Nienaber, walked away with most of the prizes for the event. Congratulations Andre on a well-deserved win. I also have to Congratulate our newly crowned GP winners, Eugene Barnard and Ben Burger. Well done fellows, you deserve your reward for your perseverance and consistently excellent golf.

Finally, I’m looking forward to our March game at Wingate, which will be my Swansong as Captain. I urge all members to try and be present for the occasion. I am also happy to announce that I will be inducting 8 new members and that surely that will be another highlight for this fantastic year.

Footnote: Please don’t forget the AGM to be held at Wingate on 22 March 18h00.

Until then, Yours in Nomads
